She Stoops to Conquer a Play Directed by Beth Milles - She Stoops to Conquer (or The Mistakes of a Night) by Oliver Goldsmith (1730-1774) is a play that leaps out of its century with a freshness and vivacity which have kept audiences laughing since 1773. Young Marlow is in a middle-class mess: obsessed with, but scared of, the opposite sex. When he mistakes his future father-in-law's house for an inn and his fiancée for a barmaid, we enter the pure comic territory of an eighteenth-century Fawlty Towers. Irish-born Oliver Goldsmith's emotional generosity and wonderful ear for dialogue make this comedy a celebration of natural feeling over hypocritical constraint as Marlow is saved from his absurdity by an astonishing young woman. Performing in the Stanley-Sinsheimer Festival Glen, this production is the SSC directing debut of Beth Milles. |
