About the book

"A Simple Story" by Mrs. Inchbald is a novel published in February 1791. This early "novel of passion" unfolds in two contrasting parts: first, the turbulent romance between spirited heiress Miss Milner and her stern guardian Dorriforth, a Catholic priest released from his vows; then, years later, the story of their rejected daughter Matilda, who must win back her father's love.
